Music

The music originates mainly from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, from around 1530 to 1770, written down in manuscripts or preserved by composers usually just as a single melody line. This allows us to give the piece a character that suits our ensemble, by means of our instrumentation choices. Shaped by the rugged coastal landscapes of the North West, the music tells of people's daily hardships, their dreams and their irrepressible will to defy adversity through song and dance. Many of these songs found their way across the Atlantic with the emigrants from northern and western countries, and formed the basis for a number of country and bluegrass melodies in America. Adaptions of some of these tunes even found their way into Anglo-Saxon pop music.
